I had the weirdest adventure with Starbucks’s Call Center.  One day my phone decided to have issues with the Starbucks’s App.  So being the I.T. specialist in me, I decided to uninstall and reinstall the app a few times.  Double checked the Google App stores version and my OS version and all of that good stuff.    I also took the time to load this app on several phones and tablets to test out if it works, and sure enough it did, so I became convinced that there was something with the App and with it’s relationship to the Samsung S6.  So not to bore you with all the boring details I got about $60+ of free Starbucks Coffee from the ordeal for my time and must have spoken to several people over the phone on this issue, we finally got the issue resolved. and the steps are as follows:

Step One

Google Play Starbucks App A system error has occurred.

Google Play Starbucks App A system error has occurred : Go to your systems settings and scroll down to Date and Time and load this section up.


Step Two

Google Play Starbucks App A system error has occurred.

Google Play Starbucks App A system error has occurred : Next under Automatic Date and Time, it should be on, but if it was off, turn it on, then off again.


Step Three

Google Play Starbucks App A system error has occurred.

Google Play Starbucks App A system error has occurred: Once it is off, turn it back on again.


Step Four

Google Play Starbucks App A system error has occurred.

Google Play Starbucks App A system error has occurred : Your end state should be this.


Once you have done this step, make sure you end the Starbucks App program and load it up again, you should be able to get it fixed straight away.

Below are details of what I had to go through with the Starbucks Team.  Hopefully this isn’t to discourage you from calling them they are very friendly almost every one of them and if you are lucky, customer service may even offer you a few cups of coffee along the way. But this should give you some window of what you would experience if you have to experience what I had to go through.  I’m not frustrated, I was just more interested in getting the fix so that I could have uploaded it here for others to see.  A did see a forum user offer this fix along my way but I brushed it off because of what I was convinced the issue was.   But by simply turning Automatic Date and Time Off and On again fixed made me feel a bit silly in the end.  So this issue doesn’t  just happen for a specific phone, if you have an Android Phone and you are having issues with this Starbucks App, try this fix, it will save you a lot of time.

Started This Adventure : March 24th 2016

MAIN ISSUE : Can’t log into the App Giving out a “A system error has occurred, please try again later.”

Secondary Issue : ** Can’t Signup for a new account ** — Tried signing the wife up and it gave out the same error.

Works on any of these devices:
Ipad 2
Ipad Mini
Iphone 4
Iphone 5s
Samsung Galaxy S4
Chrome Internet Browser Samsung S6 : Works
Native Internet Browser Samsung S6 : Works

** Doesn’t work on Samsung S6 at the moment. **
I have 2 Samsung Galaxy S6 — as a point of comparison..
Firefox Internet Browser Samsung S6 : Does Not Work
Attempted Fix :
Number of times reinstalled : 9+
Number of times password changed : 5
*Went to the Application Manager and Cleared Cache on this App.
Cleared Cache on Google Play.
Cleared Cache on Google Services.
Starbucks App : Tried Clearing the Cache and it’s Data several times.

I’ve been having the same problem since mid March on my Samsung Rugby Pro (basically a rugged S3). I reinstalled the app, there was an update yesterday I installed. Still can’t log in. Tried your fix, all excited, but it still doesn’t work. Any other ideas?

So same basic questions are all your Apps up to date? Google Play version? Starbucks App version? Android Version? My last conversation with Starbucks stated that they’ve stopped supporting anything below the Samsung Galaxy S4.

What I do know is that there is absolutely zero chance of you or me getting to the developers to ask the question. But if your issue is truly “A System Error Has Occurred…” then the main issue is truly the phone…

So ideas??..
1…. Double Check and make sure that the time is truly correct, Turn of Automatic Date and Time, and Turn it Back On Again…
2…. Connected to point one… Make sure you are in the correct time zone… The Time may be correct but you maybe in the wrong time zone… so turn on Automatic Time Zone just to be sure… See if the app would run with automatic time zone ON… if not, try again with the Automatic Time Zone Off.. but make sure you are in the right zone. For example, I live in Edmonton Alberta Canada. So I’ll be GMT-06:00 Mountain Daylight Time..

3. This was my worst case scenario.. I know you don’t want to do it… I almost did out of frustration… was to completely restart the phone… do a factory reset…

THIS is a GOD SEND!!! lol I felt ridiculous complaining I couldn’t load my starbucks app on my phone because I kept getting that error message (Because, you know, first world problems). So I would just manage by logging into my account on the website from my phone and going that route. THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting these instructions!!

I have been having this problem from last 1 month, since I have upgraded to the latest version 4.2. I am getting exactly the same error which is mentioned in this post and have tried all the suggested workarounds, however my starbucks app is still giving the same error. Could you suggest some else which I can try.

Based on the article I wrote, I have pretty much tried every step possible to get this type of issue fixed. Please try it again and again until it sticks.. it’s basically got something to do with the time of your phone vs the time of Starbucks Servers. If you can’t get this to work there is only one route at the moment that I believe should get it fixed. If don’t have any data of value on your phone, the only way that I’m pretty sure would work is to reinstall or reset your phone into it’s factory settings. This would be the only route that I can see that would be your next step.

But here is another idea… Keep calling the Call Centre… keep doing it over and over again because the only thing I loved about calling the call centre is that they offer free coffee from time to time.. so please do take advantage of this while you are in the situation. They certainly gave me quite a few to quench my thirst with.

Keep in mind since they haven’t made any effort in helping me initially about this app, that I’m under the impression that there is really nothing wrong with the Starbucks Software but really there is something wrong with the actual phone…. So please keep digging, but the phone has the issue, not the app.

Oh trust me, I’ve tackled this issue for like forever. But the best part about calling them frequently is that they would load up your Starbucks for a free Frap.. Usually they’d give you a $5 load for your time and the inconvenience.. What I gathered is that they would eventually get the idea and get a specialist to spend time with you to get it fixed…

I adore you. It has been a frustrating few weeks and after trying every update and “fix” under the sun… this worked. I NEVER would have thought to look in these settings. (This may also explain why the time on my phone is seven minutes faster than my husband’s even though we are on the same network.) Agreed, Starbucks should put this on their FAQs! THANK YOU!!!!

Just got off the phone with Customer Service and they had be check Android Web Services on Google Play, and then uninstall and reinstall and then check for software update, and then log into my account via web browser on my phone.
When the phone call got cut off I googled Starbucks app Samsung and your web space came up…AND IT WORKED!!!
Thanks so much. This needs to come up on top of google search results.
It will save so much headache and frustrations.

We uninstalled the update to Webview and it is working fine now. I found this on the Starbucks site for a blank screen, but it also worked for the “system error has occurred. try again later” error. : /
If you are running Android 7 (Nougat) or greater:
· Please go to Google Playstore > search “Chrome” to find the Chrome application and update to the latest version.
· Restart the Starbucks App.

For other versions of Android:
· Please go to “Google Playstore > search “Android System Webview” and update to the latest version.
· Restart the Starbucks App.

I just experienced a similar problem but with a different result. After logging out a couple of times during a day because I was checking two accounts (mine and my wife’s), the logins began to fail giving the “System error has occurred …” message. BTW, what a useless error message! After a few attempts, “…try[ing] again later…”, I began to research. I found this blog entry and tried the “reset automatic time/date setting”. Neither that nor updating the app nor updating the Android OS (it had just reached me coincidentally) had any affect. So I resorted to reporting the problem to Starbucks CS. Their response was swift and included these same suggestions. However included in the middle of these recommendations was the statement “As a matter of best practice, we encourage Starbucks Rewards members to change their passwords often…” and extensive description of the requirements. Since I hadn’t changed my password in a while and it did not conform to the recommendations/rules, I gave it a try (via a web browser). It worked! Apparently the problem was solved. HOWEVER, I only changed password for my wife’s account and yet my account now works also!!! Did it “reset something” in the mobile app?
Sorry for the long message but I’m hoping the full description helps others.

This is nuts. Two days ago I could no longer submit mobile orders (but everything else in the app worked just fine). Tried this, as stupid as it sounded, and it worked.
